Post colonial paradoxes and posters from the edge
Article Abstract:
An analysis of how the work of the Francophone Africa, Caribbean and Pacific research group at the University of Westminster, which explores the contradictions and ambiguities of the Francophone world, is threatened by the government's proposed concentration of research funding in a few, select institutions. Debra Kelly, a member of the research group, believes that there is a paradox at the heart of the government's plans in that it favours work that has an immediate business application - which the majority of humanities do not have - but fails to take into account the fact that cultural understanding of the sort produced by the research group feeds into the business areas in which the UK wishes to be engaged.

Who cares if you want to study for a degree?
Article Abstract:
An examination of the UK government's plans to introduce UKPd3,000/yr variable university tuition fees and the impact that the introduction of such fees would have on the chance of going to university of the 6,000-7,000 young people aged 16-18 who leave local authority care every year in England. It is argued that the fees will pose yet another challenge to care leavers who want to go to university, and that rather than further discouraging care leavers, of whom it is estimated only 1%-2% do go on to university, from going to higher education, more should be being done to make things easier for them.

Who's pulling your strings?
Article Abstract:
Reports that failing further education colleges could be taken over by private firms will increase fears about the extent to which business is collaborating with education. The reports come after Education Secretary Ruth Kelly announced a GBP 6.5 billion incentive for institutions running more courses for the benefit of employers as well as widening participation.
