An analysis of the difference in university funding between the leading institutions and the rest. The newly merged Manchester University will, in October 2004, become the fifth member of a group of universities that dominate the world of higher education finance. Manchester, along with Oxford and Cambridge universities, Imperial College London and University College London account for a fifth of the academic sector's total income.

Universities and colleges in the United Kingdom operate in an atmosphere that is riddled with racism, according to Cecile Wright, professor of sociology at Nottingham Trent University. Statistics reveal that in 2003, of over 14,000 academics in the UK, only 38 professors classed themselves as either, "black", "black Caribbean" or "black other".
