Quantum leap for the market formula
Article Abstract:
The UK government allocated 35 million pounds sterling for chemistry research in 1993-94. In future years funding will be allocated only to chemistry departments in higher education who have a high ranking in the league tables of research. The seven top-ranking institutions will receive 41% of the annual allocation. Critics say this will lead to research being done only in a few large organisations, and that it will be directed towards specific projects deemed to be useful.

Article Abstract:
The Science and Engineering Council allocates funds to be spent on scientific research in the UK. In 1990-91 they had 48 million pounds sterling to give to projects selected by their committee. Funding is often inadequate, there may be ten times more projects worthy of funds that have to look elsewhere. They also share out postgraduate studentships amongst institutions. British chemists are encouraged to form international links by the committee.

That quantum leap...
Article Abstract:
Max Planck is discussed with emphasis on the paper he presented on 14 December 1900 which was seen as the beginning of quantum theory. Planck's life was conservative as were his social views, but in science he turned out to be a revolutionary.
