Racism row reignited by v-c's remarks
Article Abstract:
Steven Schwartz, vice-chancellor of Brunel University, has found himself at the centre of a public row after accusing two staff members who have taken the university to employment tribunals over claims of race discrimination of making "unwarranted demands for money". The Association of University Teachers has attacked Schwartz's claims, stating that they have caused "great distress" to the two staff and that they raise "issues of great concern an importance about the rights of our members at Brunel to challenge racism and to seek support from their union without fear of victimisation and public criticism by their employer".

Whistleblowers: settlement in 'race row.'(student who alleged racism wins settlement)
Article Abstract:
Brian Moore won a five-figure settlement from The London Institute after an investigation found that he had been unjustly excluded from his degree course. Though the college maintains they excluded Moore from study on academic grounds -- alleging Moore's work was chronically late, sub-standard, and plagiarized -- they did admit procedural irregularities in the handling of the case. Moore intially raised the allegation of racism and was subsequently excluded from course study.

Student wins UKPd34K payout
Article Abstract:
A failed PhD student who won a UKPd34,000 financial settlement, believed to be the largest such settlement in the UK, following a four-year battle with Lancaster University, has claimed that during the case he faced an "ordeal of avoidance, denial and distortion". The student notes that when the case began in 1999 all he wanted was an honest explanation as to what had gone wrong with his PhD course and a simple apology.
