Read our lips: top-up fees simply won't work
Article Abstract:
A Labour MP and chairman of the House of Commons science and technology select committee argues that following the 2003 Labour Party conference, it has become apparent that the government will not listen to reason when it comes to its plans to introduce university top-up fees. The government has signalled that it has no plans to drop its plans to introduce top-up fees of up to UKPd3,000/yr, despite the opposition of 170 of its own backbench MPs and the conclusion by government-funded researchers that the introduction of the fees would make students from a working-class background four times less likely to go to university than somebody from a more privileged background.

...think it is vital that academics put up a fight against casualisation
Article Abstract:
An analysis of the Labour Party's calls for flexibility within the workforce, with particular attention paid to the growing trend towards casualisation in the education sector. It is argued that the growth of casual employment threatens job security and pay in the academic sector and will facilitate Labour's attempts to divide research and teaching.
