Comprehensive guidance in the '90s
Article Abstract:
Comprehensive guidance programs need to be implemented at high schools as part of the schools' dropout prevention strategy. The programs must include career awareness and intervention for high-risk students as well as enhance one-on-one counseling and conferencing for students. In addition, comprehensive guidance programs must emphasize the necessity of preparing students for the demands of the workforce by giving them the technical advantage as well as teaching them teamwork and critical thinking and problem solving skills.

How Utah got financial backing for comprehensive guidance
Article Abstract:
Secondary vocational directors in Utah noticed a decline in enrollments in vocational courses in 1989 and decided to take action to reverse the trend. The most crucial step was to ask the state government to allocate 10% of state-appropriated funds for vocational education to a comprehensive vocational guidance program, which included the retraining of counselors, teachers, principals and other persons involved in vocational guidance. Evaluations show that the vocational guidance program has been successful.
