Research cash up for grabs by firms
Article Abstract:
The UK government may divert research funds to industry from universities if proposals studied by the Office of Science and Technology are implemented. Small UK companies involved in research and develop would welcome such a scheme. Faraday Centres have been proposed as a link between industry and universities, but were rejected two years prior to 1995 in a government discussion document. The UK Department of Trade and Industry has also withdrawn funding from industrial research in the two years to 1995.

Waldegrave gets cash pledge from Treasury
Article Abstract:
The UK government committed itself to maintaining funding levels for scientific research in its 1993 White Paper. Britain only has a 5% share of international science research, and much of it is done through the research councils. They will be reorganised to offer greater efficiency. A Council for Science and Technology will be formed with the aim of seeking out which technologies will be crucial in future for the UK. Other proposals include more international cooperation and training for postgraduates.
