Research reforms anger scientists
Article Abstract:
Proposals to change research policy in Denmark have been attacked by the University of Copenhagen and other critics. The changes are aimed at simiplifying the structure of research policy organization in Denamrk. There are six research policy councils, each with 15 members, and public grants come from 62 sources. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and development argues that this system is too complicated to be efficient. Critics argue that the new system could complicate issues further and penalise independent research.

Kiwis fear for the future of science
Article Abstract:
The New Zealand government's cutbacks in research funding leaves the research community unsure about its recovery. Figures from the New Zealand Association of Scientists show that funding has fallen in real terms and could fall further, missing the government's target of increasing public science funding to just under 1% of GDP by 2010.
