Row over freedom of speech at Oxford

The Oxford Magazine, regarded for 120 years as Oxford University's forum of free expression, has been accused of suppressing controversial debate following its decision not to publish an open letter from 30 Oxford alumni which demanded an investigation into the governance and financial health of Harris Manchester College (HMC). Jim Reed, editor of the magazine, confirmed that he decided against publishing the letter after receiving an email from an unidentified HMC official which cast doubt on the veracity and status of the letter's signatories, stating that to check up on the status of the signatures would require "lengthy inquiries" that he was not prepared to make. The HMC alumna who organised the letter, Hilary Hicklin, was able to provide evidence confirming the veracity of the signatories within minutes.

Northumbria threatens academic over email
Article Abstract:
Northumbria University has removed anti-war material from the website of Martin Dyer-Smith, one of the university's leading psychology academics, after warning that his messages could offend students who support the war in Iraq, or those who have relatives in the region. Dyer-Smith stated that the university was guilty of a fundamental violation of his academic freedom and right to free speech after deleting what he claims were legitimate articles and teaching material about the war which were relevant to his field of psychology.

Censorship claim as surfers find sites blocked
Article Abstract:
Nottingham Trent University has been accused by lecturers' union Natfhe of censorship after installing the Websense software package to block staff access to a range of websites. The software has prevented access to sites of legitimate research interest.
