Save law from universities' noose
Article Abstract:
An advisory committee to the UK Lord Chancellor has produce a report on legal education in the UK, which is disappointing. The report recommends a some vocational training in common for all young lawyers. Universities have tended toimpose too many constraints on law schools. The proposals involve greater cost, and the report recommends more funding for law schools. The report suggests that funds be raised from the legal profession, yet seeks to marginalize its role in legal education.

Need for standards cannot be ignored
Article Abstract:
United Kingdom higher education has to become increasingly responsive to consumers and employers' demands on academic standards. There is a debate on whether teaching qualifications should be compulsory for academics. The UK has a highly regulated and transparent educational system and this is a good marketing tool. Major universities are unlikely to be able to oppose external assessment. Any change should not come from a government which has little interest in academic studies.
