'The habit of creating something--including a currency--simply because the US has one has been a persistent motif of postwar Europe'
Article Abstract:
An analysis of EuroScience, an all-Europe science conference, and how the Europe since the end of World War II has had a habit of attempting to emulate the United States, whether it needed to or not. It is suggested that EuroScience, which aims to emulate the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, might actually be a good idea because the idea for its creation came from scientists and not a committee in Brussels.

Worldly Europe seeks critical mass for greater impact
Article Abstract:
An analysis of a table of the top 50 universities in Europe, the place of European universities in a ranking of the world's top 200 universities and how European universities compare to North American universities. It is suggested that, while European institutions compare well with their North American counterparts, the creation of a pan-EU research council could help make them even more competitive.
