The student purse can save us from the mediocre
Article Abstract:
Analysis of data from universities in the United States seems to suggest that higher teaching fees actually translate into better teaching provision. It is argued that the higher education system in the United States is probably the best in the world, with high-quality research universities combined with unequalled levels of participation and an exceptional level of diversity and choice, and as a result of this, the most expensive universities have to work hard to demonstrate that they are actually worth the extra money they charge.

'The message from the US is that there is just about nothing that UK universities can learn from admissions practices over here'
Article Abstract:
Issues relating to the suggestion that universities in the United Kingdom have nothing to learn from the admissions practices of universities in the United States are examined. It is argued that the professionalism of admissions offices at universities in the US is a myth, and that what they in fact do well is balance the demands of their constituencies - something that is already done well by the most selective UK universities at undergraduate level.
