A garlicked isle, set in an olive oil sea
Article Abstract:
Political, social and economic changes in Britain are reflected in the history of food, growing affluence being partly responsible for the postwar food revolution. The middle classes developed an enthusiasm for French cookery in the 1950s, while the young congregated in coffee bars run by Spanish, Greek and Cypriot immigrants. Prepacked convenience food and the microwave oven changed shopping and meal habits in the 1970s. The proportion of household income spent on food declined from nearly a third between the wars to just a sixth by the 1970s.
