Strike move to break deadlock
Article Abstract:
Lecturers from colleges of further education in Wales and England met at a conference organised by Natfhe, their labor union, which plans strike action from September 21 1993, to resolve a dispute over pay and conditions. The College Employers' Forum (CEF) had set a deadline for the end of June 1993, and no agreement had been reached by then over new contracts, which CEF now advises colleges to implement. The labor union leadership is seeking further consultation without preconditions, a move opposed by some of its memebrs, who perceive the CEF as intractable.

Lords hint at union reprieve
Article Abstract:
Planned legislation to make membership of United Kingdom students' unions voluntary may be abandoned in autumn 1993, according to an education specialist from the Conservative Party. The legislation would be opposed by the House of Lords and by vice chancellors, and would be seen as an attack on the independence of universities. Official sources would neither confirm nor deny reports that the measure may be shelved, but the indications are that there will not be enough time for such legislation to be passed.

Hope turns to despair as cash crisis bites
Article Abstract:
An analysis of the impact changes to the way the Learning and Skills Council funds further education colleges has had on the colleges and those that are attempting to better themselves by taking adult education courses. It is argued that the changes, which have seen large increases in the fees paid by many students, have hit hardest the most disadvantaged students, the very people the Government claims it is keenest to encourage to reach.
