Stubbing out the truth
Article Abstract:
US professor Stanton Glantz's battle to publish 'The Cigarette Papers' shows the great influence of the tobacco industry, but it also demonstrates the great role universities play in seeking out the truth. The book analysed secret documents from British American Tobacco and its US subsidiary Brown & Williamson to show how, since the early 1960s at least, the tobacco industry was aware of the addictive nature of nicotine. The industry also knew that smoking probably caused cancer. The tobacco lobby used bullying tactics and PR campaigns to try to stop the university researchers in their work.

Amen to the pursuit of truth and reason
Article Abstract:
An analysis of the intellectual concept of belief, of folk beliefs - those that we learn through observation and experience, such as fire is hot or people laugh when they are happy - and of religious beliefs. The issue of why people continue to hold religious beliefs, despite the lack of any hard evidence and the fact that religious beliefs tend to be divisive, is examined.
