The China syndrome
Article Abstract:
US based Chinese Academic Song Yongyi was arrested by the State Security Bureau in China. He was accused of providing intelligence to institutions outside China and he was imprisoned for six months. Song was on a month long visit to China, during the summer of 1999, as part of his research into the Cultural Revolution. He suggests the Chinese authorities would not have arrested him if he had been a US citizen because they are keen to keep good relations with the US. Song has lived, with his family, in the US for 11 years and is planning to become a US citizen.
