The day British science flowered for Mr Blair
Article Abstract:
UK Prime Minister Tony Blair has been involved in a 90-minute science seminar. This was attended by 15 scientists, engineers, biologists, environmentalists, journalists, ethicists and venture capitalists, along with five government ministers. Many different issues were discussed, including the funding of scientific research, the dangers of climate change and ways of increasing public enthusiasm for science. However, two main themes emerged. These were the great ascendancy of biology as a whole and of genetics in particular and public attitudes to science.

The shape of science to come
Article Abstract:
Publication of the UK government's long-awaited White Paper on Science, Engineering and Technology: Realising our Potential, has been welcomed although some observers wonder why it took so long. The document's findings, which were produced after reading around 850 responses to consultations, are intended to be used as a framework on which the UK can build a successful scientific and engineering policy.
