Too cold a welcome for visiting professors
Article Abstract:
The United Kingdom academic world should recognise the potential contribution from industrial science, according to Michael Elves, head of scientific affairs at Glaxo. This view is echoed by Tony Godfrey, head of Biocatalysts, a technology concern, who has criticized the gap between science and industry. Other commentators argue that strategies harnessing industrial expertise in the academic world should be properly developed, and industrial scientists should not just be seen as cheap options.

A warm weather warning
Article Abstract:
There is clear evidence that global warming is already taking place, according to scientist Sherwood Rowland, whose work on the impact of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) on the ozone layer led to a worldwide ban on CFC production being implemented in 1996. He believes that it is possible that the Gulf Stream will shut down, or that there will be a permanent state of El Nino. He regrets the fact that many people only obtain information about global warming from unreliable and biased sources.

A boyish addiction to scientific labour of love
Article Abstract:
Sir Hans Kornberg, the Sir William Dunn professor of biochemistry at Cambridge University, UK, and Master of Christs' College, is a happy scientist dedicated to his work. From his humble beginnings as a German immigrant following the Kristallnacht in 1938 he became a junior technician to Dr Hans Krebs and at 32 was given Leicester University's chair of biochemistry. Sir Hans Kornberg sees scientific work as similar to a crossword puzzle with half the clues missing.
