The revolution has stalled but hope springs eternal
Article Abstract:
In celebration of the 30th anniversary of the publication of the Times Higher Education Supplement, an overview is provided of higher education in Britain since 1971, along with developments in history over the same period. Revolution is no longer in the forefront of the student imagination, and new generations are disillusioned with politics.

Levelling the playing field
Article Abstract:
Undergraduate education provision in Britain needs to grow by 50% by the year 2000 to increase competitiveness in the world economy. Discussion is taking place as to the fairest and most efficient way of increasing places. Some argue that this can be done by reducing costs to the state by asking students to contribute more.

The Council for National Academic Awards (CNAA) ceased to exist at the end of 1992. Its remit had been to award degrees earned in colleges and polytechnics and oversee their courses before awarding validation. Some of its powers will be vested in the Higher Education Quality Council.
