Truth lost in vain views
Article Abstract:
Most of the people who write about the theory of history have no personal experience of historical research but this does not prevent some of them from writing books criticising the way history is conventionally conceived and taught. The theoreticians' argument that historians do not provide a true interpretation of the past because history involves the reinvention of the past every time it is written is in line with postmodernist theories. However, not only can postmodernist historians' arguments be applied to themselves, but when taken to extremes, are narcissistic and demean the dead.

Cocooned by privilege but driving on the edge
Article Abstract:
A professor of geography at the University of California, Los Angeles, argues that our leaders need to learn the lessons of history if they are to avoid the fate suffered by failed civilizations throughout history. It is noted that while past civilizations had no way of knowing the impact of their actions on the environment around them, we have the advantage of advanced technology to help us learn from the past and therefore mend our ways before it is too late.

'Our job is to explain; it is for others to judge'
Article Abstract:
Issues relating to the question "what is history?" are examined. It is argued that simply to say that history is the study of the past is not enough, and that history can teach us about other societies, times, cultures and beliefs, thereby making us more tolerant of differences in our own world and help us build a better world for the future.
