Article Abstract:
Issues surrounding the growing realisation amongst universities in the UK that alternative methods of generating funds need to be found are examined. It is argued that the philanthropic heritage and tradition of donating to one's alma mater that exists in the US needs to be developed in the UK.

The Council for Advancement and Support of Education (Case) has produced a major report which shows no clear link between successful fundraising and the size or age of a university. The report aims to provide clear information on the amounts individual universities raise.
