Union call for strong watchdog

Academics in the UK could soon see the creation of a new ombudsman to deal with complaints against university governors and managers, as unions have commenced fresh talks with university vice-chancellors over plans to replace the system of the quasijudicial disputes arbitrator, the visitor. The Association of University Teachers has stated that it wants a full independent adjudicator for staff grievances to be established.

Unions and universities call in Acas
Article Abstract:
The Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service has been called in to help break the deadlock between the lecturers' unions and employers before formal pay talks on 25 April. Even if parties agree to meet, hopes of an end to the industrial dispute in order to stop serious disruption to exams looks doomed.
