Valuing an island's treasure
Article Abstract:
Around 6,000 Cypriot students attend private colleges in Cyprus but the colleges are facing some difficulty over having their courses accredited by the government. The seven public colleges have about 4,000 students but are insufficient to meet demand. The government have set up a body, known as KYSATS, to evaluate the quality of degrees awarded after Sept 1997. The private colleges sometimes send their students overseas, particularly to the UK, to finish their degree courses. The colleges are undergoing accreditation to allow them to teach undergraduate courses.

...believe its time to recognise the knowledge-transfer profession
Article Abstract:
The Chair of the Association of University Research and Industry Links argues that there is a need to recognise knowledge transfer as a profession and that there is a need for more consistent and permanent funding streams for knowledge transfer activity. It is contended that unless these issues are addressed, the academic community and support services may fail to attract enough experienced people from other sectors, including industry, to replenish and refresh the skill sets that are required for effective partnership.

Cyprus invests in education
Article Abstract:
Cyprus is planning to focus on educational excellence in an attempt to develop an alternative industry to tourism to support its economy. The Cyprus Council for the Recognition of Quality in Higher Education (KYSATS) was established to run parallel with the Cyprus Accreditation Council and is largely supported by the university students. Private colleges have questioned the impartiality of the council.
