We love our students--they're so appealing
Article Abstract:
A lecturer in modern US history at the University of Southampton analyses the growing trend for students to appeal the marks that they have gotten on their essays when they believe that they are unfair. It is pointed out that, by and large, lecturers have been marking essays for years and do actually know how to tell a good essay from a bad or mediocre one. It is also pointed out that many students are apparently unaware that on appeal their essay mark can go up, but that it can also remain the same or actually go down, and that there is no room to appeal the appeal.

Remind me why I'm a 'commando' lecturer
Article Abstract:
A part-time lecturer discusses the hardships that those in his profession face. It is argued that part-time staff lack job security, are poorly paid, have to fight for access to basic teaching resources and are unable to afford to attend the conferences that would keep them up to date in their profession. The knock-on effect of this is, of course, felt by the students who are then being taught by people who are not completely up to date and with whom they have minimal contact.
