We must build up skills, not burn our bridges
Article Abstract:
Plans by the Higher Education Funding Council for England to cut funding for undergraduate programmes in at least eight engineering disciplines endanger the future economic wellbeing of the UK. It is argued that engineering skills are some of the most transferable skills that a person can pick up, with engineers ending up in a wide variety of roles throughout the economy. Therefore, the choice the country faces is that of short-term cuts or long-term prosperity.
