When the table is turned
Article Abstract:
The South African government's green paper on the future of vocational education is very ambitious. Colleges are to be granted independence, they will establish closer links with business, and students will be prepared for assessments that will be part of a new national qualifications structure. There is very strong demand for vocational education and training, and colleges are unable to meet this demand in the short term. This issue will have to be addressed, as will the fact that there are significant differences in the quality of provision in the different provinces.

Wits chief puts heart in the city
Article Abstract:
Witwatersrand University, South Africa, has appointed Colin Bundy as its new vice-chancellor. He argues that academics should question the ideology of society and the relationship between society and universities. Universities have to cut costs, produce employable graduates, tackle national problems, and ensure that what they offer is relevant to society. Bindy admits to unease over the way socioeconomic needs are informed by an ideology which comes from elsewhere.
