Article Abstract:
University of Manchester, England, Professor Norman Geras suggests everyone has a responsibility to help others. He points out academics are not very forthcoming at helping others in distress and feels by nature they are often detached. Geras suggests academics can make a small effort to help those in distress without compromising themselves, such as writing a supportive letter. Some academics who have become personally involved in helping others report they have extended their own expertise. Geras accuses political philosophers of not tackling the problem of society accepting the Holocaust.

The DNA detective
Article Abstract:
Scientist Erika Hagelberg has been investigating DNA gathered from bones found on some Pacific islands including Easter Island, which may challenge the theory Asians migrated to the Pacific. She has been financially supported by the Kon Tiki museum and the Explorer Thor Heyerdahl. Hagelberg developed a technique for extracting DNA samples from old bones in 1998. She has worked on bones for anthropologists, the German police and archaeologists. Some people have been critical of her work and in 1997 she lost her grant and post as a lecturer at Cambridge University.

Love at first trilobite
Article Abstract:
Natural History Museum Researcher Richard Fortey has used his expertise in the study of trilobites to challenged previously held theories on geology. As a student he found several new trilobites on an Arctic expedition. He has written scientific books and under a pseudonym he has written humorous books. Fortey has also contributed to discussions on evolution and the theory of punctuated equilibrium. Trilobites are fossils of sea-dwelling scavengers. Fortey's most recent book, Trilobite!, is due to be published in June 2000.
