The food services provided by schools and universities are an important issue, as the provision of healthy meals could help prevent diet-related diseases such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease and cancer. While the UK government is now starting to deal with the issue of food in primary and secondary schools, universities are still not facing up to the responsibility they have to provide their students with healthy food.

Universities should ask for voluntary financial donations from students on top of tuition fees to pay for campus projects, a fund-raising conference will be told next week. The idea of requesting donations from students comes from the experience of North American universities.
