Article Abstract:
Japanese manufacturers of MiniDisc (MD) players enjoyed robust sales in the domestic portable audio market in 1998. Sales of portable MD players surpassed sales of headphone stereo systems and portable compact disc players during the year. From Jan to Nov 1998, shipments of portable MD players in Japan totaled 1.828 million units, up 48.7% from the same period the previous year. In 1999, sales of MD players are expected to surge, with design and end-of-use features being important competitive variables.

Portable MD player shipments grow in Japan
Article Abstract:
Japan's shipments of MiniDisc (MD) players in the first six months of 1999 reached 1.16 million, a 46% increase from the first half of 1998. The increase in the MD market was attributed to the introduction of more sophisticated models, playing times, proliferation of the MD format, enhancement in ease of operation and low power consumption. Japan's demand for MDs could increase to over three million in 1999, according to analysts.
