Calculators: Second-Half Prospects: Units Up, Dollars Iffy Proposition
Article Abstract:
The first half of 1984 was good for unit sales of calculators. Manufacturers say that sales may increase even more in the second half. Scientific models, printing models and solar powered units are selling the best. Panasonic expects to see unit sales increase ten percent and dollar volume to remain constant. Aurora plans to heavily promote gift sets and specialty items in the second half. Casio plans to challenge Texas Instrument in the scientific calculator market. Greatest expectations are for printing calculators.

At the 1984 Winter CES, manufacturers of watches and calculators presented high fashion products. Card size solar calculators with better lux levels dominated the calculator scene. Suppliers are expecting hand held and table top printing calculators to see an increase in sales. Casio introduced a calculator watch which is programmed by finger painting on its crystal. Timex is expanding its line of low end watches. Calculators are becoming more fashion oriented as a result of solar power.

Solar Calculators, Quartz Watches to Tell Volume Story in '84

1984 will be another good year for calculators and watches with a continued trend toward solar calculators and quartz analog watches. Solar calculator sales should jump forty percent to 11.2 million units. Analog quartz watches sales will increase 13.4 percent to the 23 million unit mark. Battery powered calculator sales should drop six percent and digital watches will see an increase of 9.62 percent in sales.
