The number of Japanese consumer electronics (CE) manufacturers producing home appliances and audio-video (A/V) products equipped with digital technology has significantly increased in 1999. This trend is exemplified in the release of such as products as CDs, MDs, and digital videocassette camcorders. With the growing use of digital technology in home appliances and A/V products, business of Japan's component industry is guaranteed to expand because of additional parts requirements from CE firms.

Trends in digital electronics bode well for producers, especially in Japan
Article Abstract:
The increasing digitalization of audio-video equipment in the market will contribute to the projected increase of 3.1% to 14.6 trillion yen in the value of Japanese consumer electronic equipment production in 2000. The increase is expected to come chiefly from the manufacture of electronic equipment designed for the industrial uses, which will grow by 3.2% to 12 trillion yen. However, growth rates in the manufacture of cell phones and personal computers in Japan is expected to decline in 2000.

Consumer electronics will witness mild gain in demand this year
Article Abstract:
Japan's consumer electronics industry is expected to post a slight increase in demand in 1999 despite continuing sluggishness in the Southeast Asian and Latin American economies. While demand for home electrical appliances could remain flat in the first half of 1999, demand could recover by the second half. The products expected to show positive growth include color TVs, camcorders, white goods, audio equipment, car navigation systems and DVD-Video players.
