The personal mobile communications market is benefitting from the technological advances in hardware, software and network infrastructure. The total number of subcribers to mobile communications services reached 170 million worldwide in FY97, while annual shipments of portable communications teminals exceeded 90 million units. The development of innovative technologies and new services are expected to fuel the growth of wireless telephone services, with the number of subscribers projected to surpass wired subscribers by 2000.

The market for ultra-small IC memory cards with large-capacity flash memories is predicted to grow up to 7.8 million units in 2001 and 14 million units in 2002. Among the leading suppliers in this market are Tokyo, Japan-based Toshiba Corp and Santa Clara, CA-based SanDisk Corp. These tiny IC memory cards is expected to speed up the convergence of audio-video (A/V) technologies with information and communications technologies and boost the A/V market.
