Industrial switchgear sales are set to soar
Article Abstract:
The increasing number of companies seeking to generate their power on site will lead to strong growth in the industrial switchgear market, predicts a report from Frost & Sullivan. Meanwhile, the share of utilities in the European medium-voltage (MV) and high-voltage (HV) switchgear market, currently almost 70%, will decline as they complete their refurbishment programmes. By 2004, demand for HV and MV equipment is predicted to reach US$ 3.92bn, with MV equipment accounting for 55% of this, up from 51.2% in 1997. In 1998, HV circuit-breaker sales switchgear revenues are predicted to reach US$ 937mn, with HV disconnectors at US$ 729mn, MV circuit-breakers at US$ 591mn and ring main units at US$ 819mn.

Take-off of PC-based controls could slow down PLC market
Article Abstract:
As PC-based control technology takes a grip on the market sales of programmable controllers look set to decline. Market analyst Frost & Sullivan has issued a report predicting that the market for PLC's (programmable logic controllers) is set to grow to reach US$ 2,800mn by 2004 from US$ 1,700mn attained in 1997. This is expected in spite of the fact that new applications for PLC's will be limited. Most of the growth will come install distributed and networked PLC's which took 60% of the market in 1997. Competition and mergers are also expected to continue. Germany is currently the market leader of Europe accounting for 45% of all sales.
