Not all polymer housings are the same quality
Article Abstract:
Low-quality spark arresters do not provide the necessary protection utility companies need for their power lines. Polymers are replacing porcelain as the covering material for the arresters. Ways to check the effectiveness of arresters are described.

Metal oxide varistor spark arresters are more likely to be damaged from steady-state overvoltages because they do not have a gap. Ways to calculate overvoltages are described to prevent damage to the arresters.
