Resists for next-generation masks
Article Abstract:
Several technologies for the fabrication of next-generation masks, particularly E-beam resists, are under development and are being considered as possible alternatives to the polybutene sulfone (PBS) process. These approaches, which have their respective benefits and disadvantages, include novolacs, non-chemically amplified chemistries, and chemically amplified (CA) resists. Specifically, several firms, including Nippon Zeon of Japan and IBM's T.J. Watson Research Center, are investigating advanced mask-making resists, including both non-CA and CA chemistries.

Fab layout design methodology: case of the 300 mm fab
Article Abstract:
Increased competition in the global semiconductors sector has made it necessary that fab layout designs are optimized so as to maximize production efficiency while also increasing flexibility. Improved capital use generally requires an increase in wafer size with a corresponding decrease in die size. Efficient fab layout design also optimizes production by reducing manufacturing expenses by a minimum of 10% to 30%. However, elements such as ballroom versus bay-chase cleanrooms and layout design methodology must be considered in constructing an efficient fab.

Asia-Pacific chip sales improved in April
Article Abstract:
Semiconductor sales in the Asia-Pacific increased 4.1% in April 1998, according to the Semiconductor Industry Association. Global sales for semiconductors also increased to over $10.38 billion. Asia-Pacific's positive sales growth compensates the 2% sales decline in the US, 1.8% slip in Japan and the 1.5% drop in European markets. Sales for digital signal processors significantly increased 33.6% in 1997 and are anticipated to rise 23% in 1998 due to by growth of certain personal, such as communications equipment, home appliances and entertainment systems.
