Group forms project for advanced telecom standards
Article Abstract:
The 3rd-Generation Partnership Project is being organized by five telecommunications standards-setting organizations. The Project's goal is to develop standards for advanced mobile communications in the next century. Its founders are the Assn of Radio Industries and Business, the Telecommunications Technology Committee of Japan and the European Telecommunications Standards Institute, the Standards Committee Telecommunications of the US and the Telecommunications Technology Assn of Korea.

Demand for communications equipment to rise 8.3% annually
Article Abstract:
The demand for Japanese-made communications equipment will increase at an annual rate of 8.3% to reach 6.74 trillion yen by FY2005. According to the Communications Industry Assn of Japan (CIAJ), for FY2000, demand for communications equipment made by Japanese-affiliated makers outside Japan will show an increase of 11.7% to 4.67 trillion yen. The CIAJ forecasts that several trends will continue to push demand for communications equipment.

Mitsubishi sees glint of profit in submarine cables
Article Abstract:
Mitsubishi Electric Corp expects proceeds of its sales of communications equipment to reach Y19 billion when it finalizes the FY1998 books in Mar 1999. The firm is presently focusing on the supply of optical submarine equipment. Management wants to increase sales to Y65 billion in FY1999 and to Y100 billion in FY2000. Mitsubishi intends to attain its sales goal through a cooperative marketing partnership with Kokusai Denshin Denwa Co Ltd.
