Sales of audio products with MDLP surge onward
Article Abstract:
Sales of audio systems with the MiniDisc long play (MDLP) function are booming since these devices first appeared in late Aug 2000. MDLP gives users the option of choosing longer recording modes, or 2x or 4x recording and replay. Conventional blank MDs can be used in this mode without modification through the ATRAC3 compression technology. The feature also allows for economical recording on MDs since twice or four times as much music can be recorded on a single disc.

Before the introduction of MDLP, 74-min MD discs contained a maximum of 74 min of stereo sound, and 80-min MD discs held 80-min of stereo sound.
