Sanyo taps sun for power, gel for slimness in rechargeable batteries

Soft Energy Co is planning to reinforce its compact rechargeable batteries as core products while strengthening its solar cells and other businesses. Soft, a subsidiary of Sanyo Electric Company Ltd, registered sales of 255 billion yen in FY1999 and plans a 12% increase to 287 billion yen in FY2000 and 450 billion yen to 500 billion yen in 2005. The company also plans to invest 36.8 billion yen in its battery business for FY2000.

Matsushita Battery focuses on compact rechargeable batteries

Matsushita Battery Industrial Company Ltd manufactures and sells primary, rechargeable or secondary batteries and solar cells. It has six plants in Japan and 23 production subsidiaries in 15 countries. It has made compact rechargeable batteries its priority target given the strong demand for power supplies in communication equipment, power tools and personal computers. The company's capacity to provide total systems, including chargers and battery packs, solidifies its position as industry leader.

GS-Melcotec steps up overseas rechargeable battery sales

GS-Melcotec Company Ltd, a joint-venture among Mitsubishi Electric Corp, Saft SA and Japan Storage Battery Company Ltd, has reinforced its overseas sales bases through setting up of wholly-owned sales firms outside Japan. These include a European base in London, UK, in Nov 1998, a North American base in Los Angeles, CA, in Jan 1999, and a Taiwanese base in Taipei, Taiwan, in Apr 1998. GS-Melcotec projects that its FY1999 overseas sales will top sales in Japan.
