Soaring gains keep digital cameras rolling along

Japanese digital camera makers in 1999 shipped 5.815 million of their products within Japan and overseas. That figure is an increase of 82% from the volume shipments in the previous year, while value jumped 72% to 255.9 billion yen. Of these gains, shipments inside the country soared 41% to 1.682 million units, with value increasing 51% to 78.1 billion yen. Exports surged 107% to 4.133 million, with value rising 83% to 177.7 billion yen.

Advanced features and more sophisticated functions provided by combining computer, communication and image- processing technologies have fueled the cameras' market appeal. The most recent models released by Japanese manufactures are digital cameras' with 3 million or more pixels in the CCD and with 3x optical zoom lenses.
