HDLs are changing the dynamics of the PLD market

Article Abstract:

Hardware Description Languages (HDL) such as Verilog and VHDL provide a more effective approach for creating complex applications of high-capacity programmable logic devices (PLD) than schematic capture. Schematic capture is basically the computerization of the manual paper-and-pencil drawing technique of the past. VHDL and Verilog, though they demand a high level of abstraction, efficiently and effectively describe what designers want to implement in a physical silicon. They also help to simulate the conditions under which the design would need to operate. In the past, designers were locked into one vendor's product and tools, but with Verilog and VHDL, designers can transport their designs for multiple vendor devices. Engineers who want to use the high-productivity HDLs should look for vendors who offer a comprehensive migration path using training modules, on-line reference guides and assistance as new code is generated.

Malaysia moves up the food chain

Article Abstract:

Malaysia is becoming a major player in the semiconductor components market after having already established itself as a good Southeast Asian country for low-cost components. Some computer companies that are moving some of their operations to the country include Dell Computer, Packard Bell, NEC, Gateway 2000 and AST Research. The Malaysian government is helping in the recent development as it seeks to move its workforce to higher paying jobs and away from labor-intensive manufacturing. The country is a good bet for computer manufacturers as they move production of keyboards, monitors, televisions and radios there. One motivation from the government is a pioneer status for foreign companies where they need only pay taxes on 30 percent of their revenue for five years.
