Sony cranks up DVD output to full scale, weighs new investment

Sony Corp aims to double production of DVD players in year 2000 to 5 million or 6 million units by maintaining full-scale operations in its factories. Expecting global demand for the products will total 17 million units, the company seeks a 30% share of the worldwide market. Sony makes DVD players in Japan, Malaysia, Mexico and Shanghai, China. Together, the company's factories in these countries produce 600,000 units monthly, with the Malaysian plant accounting for 400,000 DVD players a month.

Pioneer forges ahead in DVD players, seeks to raise global sales

Pioneer Corp will expand its DVD operation by offering variations of its DVD-Video players around the world. Also, the company will pursue product development for other format variants in its DVD lineup. In expanding its DVD business, the company will increase its lineup of combination DVD and minicomponent systems. Pioneer expects these products will increase sales during campaigns in late 2000 by using different sales strategy for each market.

For the road: Sharp's portable DVD players sport large screens
Article Abstract:
Sharp Corp in Sep 1999 launched the DV-L70 series of DVD players that are light and capable of showing fine-resolution images. The company shipped the DV-L7OU to the US market, the DV-L70s to European markets and the DV- L70W to member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). In Feb 2000, Sharp introduced the DV-710 series, with the U version for the US, the S version for Europe and the W version for the ASEAN countries.
