UK: ADVENT OF BATTERY-POWERED MINITRAM?
Article Abstract:
A UK consortium including British Aluminium, Transport Design International and Symonds Travers Morgan among others have devised a battery-powered tram called the Minitram and are hoping to gain the GB[pound] 250,000 needed to build a prototype early in 1999. The vehicle will use on-board batteries which will be charged during the night with cheap off-peak electricity. The batteries would store sufficient energy to power the tram for the all the next day. It would operate at a maximum speed of 50 km per hour and not need overhead power supplies. The price of a 35 passenger Minitram would be around GB[pound] 200,000 to GB[pound] 250,000 only 25% of the cost of a standard light rail vehicle.

UK: ABB CREATES ABB LOW VOLTAGE SYSTEMS
Article Abstract:
The UK-based low voltage distribution and motor control operations of AAB, namely Durham Switchgear and Centre Switchgear, have been merged to form the new company ABB Low Voltage Systems. A GB[pound] 22mn to GB[pound] 23mn turnover is envisaged for the combined business in 1999 which would give it a 4% share of the UK market. ABB also plans to introduce a new lightweight modular switchgear product range in the first six months of 1999. By offering more products from a single source, ABB LV Systems is optimistic it will be able to enter new markets and exploit the still buoyant commercial sector.
