VCR in '84: Industry Headed for Second Blockbuster Year
Article Abstract:
1984 is expected to be another blockbuster year for VCRs. A conservative forecast is over five million half-inch VCRs to be sold during the year. Prices will be lower and there should be no scarcity, regardless of demand. Eighty-nine per cent of America's ninety-three million homes do not yet have VCRs. Portable units should have seventeen per cent of the market. The videodisk player should continue plodding along, with sales of one-half million units in 1984. Seventy-five per cent of videodisc player sales in 1983 were of CED models, and this should be the same in 1984. Sales of blank videotapes are expected to reach sevety-five million. Price cutting should continue.
