Video Programming: Music Video at Retail: Software Sales Thriller of '84?
Article Abstract:
Suppliers and retailers of video programming are unsure of the future of video music. A wide variety of video music products have been placed on the market. Although retailers expect growth in sales, they question whether the category is ready to mature and are unsure of the targeted audience. Sooner or later the video programming industry is going to run of out movies. Last year the studios made 118 movies while over a thousand titles were released. Vestron's Thriller, starring Michael Jackson, is the industry's first music video blockbuster. Some dealers wonder whether Thriller is an isolated event or the beginning of a trend. Most retailers agree that the availability of video music with top artists is a major factor.

Movie moguls are afraid that distributors and retailers will back away from CED. The fear is that dealers will lower prices to eliminate inventories and then refuse to carry the products.
