Coming alive...
Article Abstract:
Sheffield, England, suffers from a dearth of cultural and leisure facilities, and local magistrates were refusing permission for new establishments to open. Public protests and a change in the composition of magistrates have changed this, and new clubs have opened in the city. There are from 4,000 to 5,000 people employed in night-time establishments in Sheffield. Many of those involved in urban renewal projects in England would prefer local government to be able to decide on which new establishments should have licenses, rather than magistrates taking the decision.

Another brick in the lane: working with English Heritage, Bethnal Green's City Challenge team is restoring streets, facades and interiors in an historic part of the East End
Article Abstract:
Bethnal Green City Challenge in London is operating a Conservation Area Partnership scheme with English Heritage. 33 buildings are considered by English Heritage to be at risk and work has already started on 23 of the buildings. Many of the reconstruction projects are complicated, and these are favoured by Bethnal Green City Challenge, rather than straightforward street improvements. BGCC will only award grants if the materials used are original.
