Counting on a numbers game
Article Abstract:
Delegates at the 1996 Statistics Users' Council conference in Sheffield University, England, reviewed the objectives, methods and interpretation of UK environmental statistics to determine whether current procedures are acceptable. Unbiased and numerical data is difficult to achieve in numerous areas of statistical analysis, said Council for the Protection of Rural England representative Paul Hamblin. National statistics programmes are not adequate for accurate environmental monitoring and should be reconsidered, said Environment Agency representative John Seager.

Food for thought: revitalising the high street needs more than just a refusal to all greenfield superstore proposals
Article Abstract:
Sainsbury's Huw Williams, claimed at the TCPSS summer school, that simply blocking out of town superstore developments will not revitalise struggling town centres. He believes that local authorities, retailers and developers must work together on a strategy to encourage shoppers back to the high street, with more positive proposals for the town centres.
