Landfill liabilities
Article Abstract:
Many of the clay pits which were once a common sight in the county of Bedfordshire have now closed down, and some are being used as landfill sites. The county has now become one of the leading waste disposal centres for the south east of England, even taking waste from other counties and from London. This has caused concern among local residents, who claim that landfill sites are creating environmental problems. Some councillors are now calling for more advanced waste disposal methods to be used and for greater public consultation to take place.

Room for one more inside: light rapid transit systems are seen as a way to rejuvenate public transport. But they could be implemented at a loss of other modes of transport
Article Abstract:
Trams or light rapid transit (LRT) systems are seen by many large urban authorities as a way of rejuvenating public transport, dealing with congested city centres and regenerating decaying areas. However an RAC survey shows that the public use their cars for 80% of all journeys and figures from the DoT show that bus passenger numbers are down. Local government has little control over bus public transport and this has affected decision making. LRT may be implemented at the expense of other forms of transport.
