The usage of electronic drawings is becoming banal on today's larger construction projects. The financial and managerial problems associated with an in-house computer aided design (CAD) department, and the benefits of reduced costs and increased productivity due to outsourcing the CAD work, and the methods of choosing a right partner for the business are analyzed.

The electrical and mechanical industry should wake up and act to set up a statutory fund to train people. The ageing workforce and the low number of entrants into the field is a cause for concern and the future skills pool needs to be adequately filled up.
