EV watch: No-tip three-wheelers come of age
Article Abstract:
Corbin-Pacific Inc., Hollister, CA, and Transit Innovations Inc., two independent producers of three-wheel electric vehicles (EVs), have new designs which are intended to get rid of the danger of turnover. The Sparrow Personal Transit Module (PTM) is a single-occupant model from Corbin-Pacific and was designed for short commutes. It has a low centers of gravity and roll, with batteries below the level of the front axle. The Project 32 (P32) Slalom from Transit has a suspension system that causes it to bank into curves as a motorcycle or airplane would. Article also discusses a recent American Honda announcement about stopping production of the EV Plus zero-emission vehicle and the Intnl. Electric Vehicle Symposium and Exposition in 10/99 in China.

Cellular security: better, but foes still lurk
Article Abstract:
Cellular telecom service providers have been relatively successful in dealing with the problem of 'cloning,' which refers to theft of cell phone ID numbers, but problems with subscription fraud and subsidy fraud have so far proved more difficult to eliminate. Subscription fraud occurs in several variant forms, including pretending to be another real person, pretending to be a nonexistent person, and pretending to intend to pay a bill. Subsidy fraud involves using handsets that have been subsidized by a specific carrier on another carrier's network.

Making a scope from a PC and cards
Article Abstract:
Gage Applied Sciences Inc has brought out GageScope for Windows, a PC-based oscilloscope software package. It can control Gage's CompuScope family of data acquisition and oscilloscope cards. GageScope makes multichannel cards fully configurable. Users can control various parameters, among them sampling rate and trigger level. Signals can be saved in .SIG binary format or in 2-column ASCII format. The software and plug-ins are compatible with systems with NT and Windows 95 on a Pentium or better.
