Eye of beholder part of head-up display
Article Abstract:
MicroVision (Seattle, WA) has developed Virtual Retinal Display (VRD), a head-mounted display for computers and portable electronic devices. The new display technology projects a low-power beam of light through the pupil and into the eye and paints, as it were, images, onto the retina a pixel at a time. It looks to the viewer as though it were a 17" video monitor an arm's length out in front. Fail-safe mechanisms make the device safe, and it is energy efficient. Color, from red, green and blue light sources in the system, comes out as thought from a larger portion of the color palette than with flat-panel displays, which are usually used for head-mounted displays. The VRD can be used outdoors, with luminance about 1000 cd/sq m and is to reach the high definition television standard in 1999, that is, 1920x1080 pixels. Diagram illustrates technology.
